Rockford RiverHawks News Release
ZION, Ill. - A day after Rockford's elimination from playoff contention, some rookie RiverHawks gave reason to look forward to 2011.
Each of the RiverHawks' five rookie-classification batters were in a youthful lineup Friday, and each had at least one base hit in Rockford's 10-8, 10-inning win at Lake County. Relievers Brett Durand and Scott Roehl combined for five scoreless innings as the RiverHawks rallied from a pair of deficits.
Rookie Bud Long was 3-for-5 with two RBI and singled in a 10th-inning run. Jay Bresnahan was 2-for-5 with two doubles. Evan McArthur and John Wagle each singled and Wagle added a run-saving diving catch. Rookie catcher Franco Valdes, who drove in four runs Friday, hit a three-run homer in a five-run fourth inning.
Veteran Victor Diaz also homered for Rockford. Lake County's Jeff Dunbar hit a two-run homer.
The Fielders lost leads of 4-0 and 8-6. Long started a two-run rally in the seventh with a single and Bresnahan doubled him to third base. Long scored on a wild pitch and Bresnahan crossed home on a Valdes groundout to tie the game at 8-8.
In the top of the 10th, Travis Scott and Diaz hit back-to-back singles to start the inning. Lake County reliever Marco Gonzalez (3-4) threw a run-scoring wild pitch. Long singled home Diaz.
Durand (8-8) struck out seven of the 15 he faced in four innings for the win. Roehl struck out two in a perfect inning of work for his 18th save.
The RiverHawks continue their season-ending series at 6 p.m. Saturday. It is not scheduled to be broadcast. The RiverHawks are back on the air for Sunday's 1 p.m. game against the Fielders.
