Brooklyn Cyclones News Release

Brooklyn, NY, August 1st, 2003 ¯ While many people may find his voice synonymous with Detroit Tigers baseball, Ernie Harwell began his professional broadcasting career in Brooklyn. On August 4th, the 55th anniversary of Harwell's first broadcast, a game in which the Dodgers defeated the Cubs 5-4, the Brooklyn Cyclones will be honoring the Hall of Fame announcer with a special pre-game ceremony.

"Ernie Harwell is a legendary voice in the game of baseball. Most people don't realize his career began in a Brooklyn Dodger broadcasting booth. In continuing with the rich tradition of Brooklyn baseball history, it is very fitting to have a night in his honor," said Steve Cohen, general manager of the Brooklyn Cyclones.

In addition to the pre-game ceremony in which Mr. Harwell will be throwing out the first pitch, he will also broadcast an inning of baseball with Warner Fusselle on WKRB radio as well as inning in the broadcast booth for FOX Sports Net.

Harwell served four years in the Marines during World War II, before his announcing career began. He was the only announcer ever traded for a player after Branch Rickey sent catcher Cliff Dapper to Atlanta Crackers in exchange for allowing Harwell to break his contract. His resume includes inductions into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, the Radio Hall of Fame and the National Sportscasters Hall of Fame among others.

The Brooklyn Cyclones are the Class-A affiliate of the New York Mets. In their inaugural season the team compiled a 52-24 record on its way to winning the New York-Penn League Championship. In 2002, they followed up by breaking their own Short Season Class-A attendance record with 317,124 fans. Former New York Met Tim Teufel is the manager. The team plays its home games at KeySpan Park, the 7,500-seat stadium in Coney Island. Box office hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Ticket information is available by calling 718-449-TIXS, by visiting the team's website at www.brooklyncyclones.com, or by calling the Shea Stadium box office at 718-507-TIXX.
