BURLINGTON, VT --- Garth McKinney's two-run homer keyed a five-run fourth inning to lead the Oneonta Tigers to a 6-3 victory over the Vermont Expos in New York-Penn League action Friday night at Centennial Field.
The Tigers trailed 2-0 and did not have a base hit over the first three innings off Expos starter Devin Perrin, but Oneonta would get a one-out single from Tony Giarratano and RBI triple to centerfield from Richard Burgos to cut the Vermont lead to 2-1.
Perrin, who was on a short pitch count in his first start off the disabled list, was relieved by Anthony Pearson after the Burgos triple. Pearson promptly gave up the two-run homer to McKinney on a 2-0 pitch for a 3-2 Oneonta lead. After a strikeout and walk, the Tigers got RBI singles from Vince Blue and Bo Flowers to complete the five-run inning.
The Expos had taken a 2-0 in the first inning as each of the first three batters got a hit off Oneonta starter Andy Baldwin. Jason Tuttle led off the Vermont first with a single up the middle to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. Brad Ditter followed with a double to leftcenter and Kory Casto then knocked in both runners with a double down the leftfield line.
But Baldwin (4-1) settled down to get out of the inning with no further damage, then allowed just one more run on four hits over the next four innings to pick up the victory. The Expos cut the deficit to 5-3 in the fifth inning off Baldwin when Casto doubled home Ditter for his third RBI of the game after Ditter had reached on a single.
The Tigers added an insurance run in the eighth when Burgos doubled home Giarratano, who had led off the inning with a single, for a 6-3 Oneonta lead. Burgos was 2-for-5 with one run, double, triple and two RBI, while McKinney was 2-for-4 for the Tigers. Giarratano went 2-for-2 with two walks and two runs, while Chris Homer pitched the ninth inning for his eighth save of the season for Oneonta (29-14).
Casto was 2-for-4 with two doubles and the three RBI for the Expos, while Ditter was 2-for-4 with two runs and Salomon Manriquez was 2-for-4. Pearson (0-8) allowed three runs on four hits over 2.2 innings of relief to take the loss for Vermont (8-36).
The Expos now head out for three games at Lowell before returning home to Centennial Field on Tuesday night to begin a seven-game homestand, their longest homestand of the season.
