Brookins Returns to Iowa Barnstormers

DES MOINES - The Iowa Barnstormers re-sign defensive back and kick returner Mervin Brookins, Head Coach and Director of Football Operations Joe Brannen announced today.

Brookins (5-10, 180, Sacramento City College) returns to the Iowa Barnstormers for a second season, this time to play in the Indoor Football League (IFL). Last season, Brookins joined the Barnstormers team mid-season to see game action in six matchups. On defense, he collected ten total tackles while snagging four interceptions for sixty-eight yards. A versatile player, Brookins proved to be one of the Barnstormers leading kick returners with 30 attempts for 546 yards.

"I am excited to have Mervin back in a Barnstormers uniform. It will be huge for us to have a veteran defensive back in the secondary and his explosiveness will be on full display in the return game," said Brannen. "Mervin is a guy I see as a leader for our team both on the field and in the community of Des Moines as we gear up for our 2015 season."

The 2015 season will mark Brookins' fifth playing professional football. Brookins has spent tenures with the Los Angeles KISS, San Jose SaberCats, Spokane Shock, and the now-defunct Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz, all of the Arena Football League (AFL).

Brookins played collegiate football at Sacramento City College and Bethel College, where he was selected Second-Team All-Defense in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) and received honorable mention honors.

The Iowa Barnstormers 2014 Open Tryout Camp is scheduled for November 1, 2014 in Pella, Iowa. Attendees must be 18 years of age or older, non-college eligible, and interested in playing professional indoor football.
