Broncos Topped by Pats in Game 6 Loss

The Swift Current Broncos had a chance to knock off the defending Eastern Conference Champion Regina Pats in Game 6 on Saturday night at the Brandt Centre but it wasn't meant to be. Swift Current fell behind early and ultimately suffered a big 7-2 loss, forcing a Game 7 back in Swift Current on Monday night.
Regina scored at the 14:25 mark as forward Robbie Holmes tipped in an Aaron Hyman wrist shot by Broncos goaltender Stuart Skinner. The play went under video review and was deemed a good goal as Holmes' stick was below the cross bar thus allowing the goal.
Pats forward Cameron Hebig scored a little over a minute later, executing a wraparound attempt and putting Swift Current behind 2-0 after one period of play.
It only took 55 seconds of second period play for Hebig to net his second of the game. Then Jake Leschyshyn increased the Broncos deficit to 4-0Â midway through the second period.
The Broncos made themselves present on the score sheet when Giorgio Estephan made a slick move to slide a low shot by the pad of Pats goaltender Ryan Kubic. The goal came from in close with Glenn Gawdin and Colby Sissons registering the helpers.
However, Pats forward Nick Henry released a one-timer attempt from the back of the left faceoff dot in Broncos territory and it beat Skinner to once again give Regina a four-goal lead at 5-1.
Rookie goaltender Joel Hofer entered the game for Swift Current to begin the third period and the Broncos remained in trouble.
Pats captain Sam Steel scored his first of the playoffs courtesy of a wraparound while Matt Bradley also potted his first to make it a hefty 7-1 hole for the Broncos.
Max Patterson banged home his first goal of the postseason from in close on a late Broncos power play chance to cut the score to 7-2 but that stood as the final outcome.
One positive note for Swift Current was the play of their special teams. Their power play unit clicked twice on five attempts while the penalty kill units went a perfect 6/6. Shots on goal favoured Regina 33-27.
Game 7 of this epic Round One set is slated to go on Monday, April 2nd at the Innovation Credit Union i-Plex. Puck drop is at 7:00pm MT.
