Brockton, Mass. - Fall River, Mass., native Buster Lussier took the mound for a spot start and came away with the victory, as the Brockton Rox built a big early lead and cruised to a 9-3 victory over the Worcester Tornadoes in a Can-Am League contest at Campanelli Stadium on Saturday evening.

Worcester got on the board first as LF Billy Cather homered on the second pitch of the game, but the Rox quickly responded with four runs in the bottom of the first on RF Keith Brachold's RBI double, back-to-back sacrifice flies from 3B Philip Cuadrado and DH Clyde Williams, and 2B Scott Wearne doubling, going to third on an error, and coming home on a two-out wild pitch.

Brockton extended its lead to 7-1 in the third on a bases-clearing double by SS Dominic Ramos. The Rox then tacked on two more in the fifth inning, with Wearne scoring on another wild pitch and CF Chris Valencia stroking an RBI single.

Worcester tallied single runs in the sixth and eighth on solo blasts from CF Eric Asadoorian and 2B Mark Minicozzi.

Williams led the Rox with a 3-for-4 evening, while Valencia, Brachold and Wearne each had two hits. Cather was 3-for-5 for the Tornadoes (8-13).

Lussier (1-0) threw five solid innings, allowing the lone run, scattering six hits and fanning four. Worcester starter Byron Short (0-5) was the losing pitcher on the night, allowing seven runs on five hits in three innings of work.

"We've been winning lately because we've been doing the little things well. We've been getting hits when we've needed them, and our pitching has gotten outs when we've needed them. Buster [Lussier] was able to come in and make a spot start for us, and did a great job," said Rox manager Chris Carminucci.

It was the fifth straight win for Brockton (12-9); during the streak, the Rox pitching staff has assembled a 2.03 ERA.

Brockton will attempt to make it a perfect 6-0 homestand on Sunday afternoon, as the Rox' Mike Wlodarczyk (2-1) takes on the Tornadoes' Matt McDonald (1-0) at 1:05 p.m.
