New Haven County Cutters News Release

Brockton, MA- The New Haven County Cutters dropped game one of a three game series on Monday, falling 10-6 to the Brockton Rox on a chilly night at Campanelli Stadium. New Haven scored five times in the ninth, but couldn¡¯t overcome an early 9-0 deficit to the Rox.

Brockton shortstop Saul Bustos broke a scoreless tie in the second with a solo blast giving the Rox the early lead. Chad Stewart added a sacrifice fly later in the inning, making it 2-0 Brockton after two.

The game remained that way until the fifth, when the Rox broke the game open with six runs off New Haven starter Tim Keinath. Jake Daubert got things going with a one out RBI single extending the lead to 3-0. Saul Bustos followed with a RBI base hit making it 4-0 Rox. Then with the bases loaded, Keinath hit Mike Sandoval forcing in the fifth Brockton run.

With the bases still loaded, lefty Buddy Bengle came on to relieve Keinath and struck out the first batter he faced. However, Bengle then allowed a RBI single by Stewart and a two RBI base hit by Schuyler Doakes capping off the six run inning for Brockton.

The Cutters struggled offensively in the game against Brockton starter Brian Buchanan. The All-Star lefty surrendered just two hits through the first six innings as Brockton led 9-0 after six.

In the seventh, Darren Ciraco spoiled Buchanan's shutout bid, leading off the inning with his sixth homerun of the season. Ciraco also added a double and single on the night.

Kris Zacuto brought the Rox into double digits with his eleventh home run of the season off Laine McKeller in the eighth.

In the ninth, the Cutters made things close against Rox reliever Matt Bennett. With New Haven down to their final out, Darren Ciraco doubled and scored on a RBI single by Aaron Fera. Adam Shorsher then hit a two-run homer off Bennett to cut the Brockton lead to 10-4.

Then a Billy Rich single up the middle was followed by Nick Hiter's first homerun of the season, an opposite field shot against Bennett, making it a 10-6 game.

Buchanan (11-3) went seven innings allowing one run on three hits to earn his eleventh win of the season. New Haven starter Tim Keinath (3-6) took the loss, giving up eight runs in 4.1 innings.

The Cutters return home to open a six-game home stand on Friday, August 20th, against the North Shore Spirit. Every Friday night game at Yale Field is followed by a fireworks spectacular.
