North Shore's Taylor and Calvert sweep NEL player of the week awards

Durham, N.C. -- North Shore's Lucas Taylor and Klae Calvert were selected by SportsTicker as the Northeast League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, on Monday, Aug. 16 for the period of Aug. 9 - 15. This marks the first time this season either has been recognized, but the third and fourth different Spirit player to be honored by SportsTicker.

Taylor, who joined the team on June 19, had 12 hits in 22 at bats for a .545 batting average. Included in those 12 hits were two triples and a home run, his first of the season, for a slugging percentage of .864. In addition, Taylor scored 12 runs, had five RBI and stole five bases for North Shore, which won all six of its games last week. He is in his second year of professional baseball.

Calvert, who was activated from the Inactive List on August 10, appeared in four games last week and went 2-0 with a save and had an earned run average of 0.00. In 9 innings of work, he allowed six hits, struck out five and walked two to help the Spirit pull within a half game of Quebec in the North Division. Calvert was signed as a nondrafted free agent by the Boston Red Sox in 1995 and spent two years in the organization, making three starts for Single-A Lowell in 1997. Last season, he went 8-5 with a 3.94 ERA for North Shore, his first season in the Northeast League.
