IL1 Norfolk Tides

Britton, Tides Rush by Buffalo

June 21, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release

A five-run third inning and a solid effort by Zach Britton lifted Norfolk to a 5-3 win over the Buffalo Bisons Thursday afternoon at Harbor Park.

The Tides got all the runs they would need in the third inning, as Norfolk batted around against Buffalo starter Jeurys Familia (5-4). Lew Ford, Miguel Tejada and Bill Hall each had RBI singles in the frame, while Jamie Hoffmann added a run-scoring double.

The five runs were enough for Britton (2-1), who labored through a two-run second inning but rebounded to post his first Quality Start since joining the Tides on June 5. The 24-year-old surrendered two runs on four hits in six innings of work, walking two and striking out five. He retired 12 of the final 13 batters he faced and allowed just five balls to be hit out of the infield.

Zach Phillips yielded a run in the eighth inning to let the Bisons pull within 5-3, but J.C. Romero and Pat Neshek each tossed a scoreless inning of relief to keep the Bisons off the board and help Norfolk wrap up the series win.

Ford and Tejada each had two hits for Norfolk, which finished its homestand at 6-2. The Tides have now won consecutive series for the first time this season. The Tides also won a season series vs. Buffalo for just the second time since 2002.

The Tides open up an eight-game road trip on Friday night as they start a four-game series in Toledo. Chris Tillman (6-8, 4.02) will take the hill for Norfolk against right-hander Thad Weber (4-5, 3.73).
