Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

Salisbury, Md.- Behind seven shutout innings from Zach Britton and a plethora of clutch two-out hits, the Shorebirds breezed past West Virginia on Saturday night in the first game of a four-game series at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. Delmarva jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first six innings, scoring runs in four different frames, all coming with two outs.

The scoring began early, as Delmarva's Joe Mahoney cleared the bases with an three-run opposite field home run with two down in the first. Mahoney's bomb, his third of the season, gave the Shorebirds a 3-0 edge that they would not relinquish.

Starter Zach Britton was masterful for Delmarva, allowing just three hits in his seven scoreless innings. While West Virginia put runners on base in every inning except one, Britton managed to escape unscathed, aided by three double play grounders through the first five innings. The talented left-hander picked up his second victory of the season.

Leading 4-0 heading to fifth, the Shorebirds first two batters were retired quietly, but Delmarva's offense was far from done. Matt Tucker launched a two-out, no-doubter over the wall in right field for his first homer of the season. The next batter, Tyler Henson, nearly went back-to-back, lining it off the top of the wall in left-center for a double. He would score on Anthony Martinez' clutch RBI single, a tally that put the ‘Birds on top 6-0.

After adding another two-out score in the sixth on Ryan Adams' single that plated Joe Nowicki, the Shorebirds led 7-0. Though Aaron Odom struggled out of the Delmarva bullpen, the home team easily hung on for the 7-3 triumph, their fourth win in their last five games.
