Hickory Crawdads News Release
Hickory, returning home after a week of its best offensive production in 2008, fell to a Charleston extra-base hit barrage in an 8-2 loss Saturday night. The RiverDogs, who came to L.P. Frans Stadium losers of three straight for the first time this year, tagged Crawdads starter Dustin Molleken for a season-high three home runs en route to six extra-base hits on the night.
The loss torpedoed Hickory's chances of continuing its winning ways from a seven-game road trip on its return home.
Hickory jumped 14 points in team batting average while away from L.P. Frans Stadium, but Saturday's struggles matched the season-high for largest margin of defeat suffered by the Crawdads this season.
Bright spots for Hickory (15-15) included solo home runs from Erik Huber and Marcus Davis in the fourth and sixth innings, respectively, to each tie for the team lead in homers with five.
Charleston (21-8) received back-to-back home runs from Brian Baisley and Dave Williams in the second inning, though, helping establish an early 3-0 lead.
Justin Snyder would add a solo home run for the R-Dogs in the fifth and by the time the night was over, Charleston had hit three home runs, two doubles and a triple.
Lead-off hitter Abraham Almonte did much of the damage for the visitors, going 3-4 with 3 RBI, a double and a triple.
Molleken took the loss, dropping to 2-2 after allowing six runs in 5.2 innings.
Charleston's Adam Olbrychowski improved to 2-2 with the win, striking out a season-high seven batters in a season-best 7 innings.
Also striking hits for the Crawdads were Miles Durham, who extended his current hitting streak to nine straight games, and Bobby Spain.
The loss drops Hickory to .500 for the first time in seven games and the Crawdads are now 1-3 in the first games of homestands this season.
Hickory looks to climb back above the even-water mark in game two of the series Sunday.
Crawdads RHP Rafael De Los Santos (1-1, 4.01 ERA) takes on RiverDogs RHP Zach McAllister (3-1, 1.13), with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
It is Conrad's Little Claw Club Sunday and Nestle Game Night. Tickets are available right here at www.hickorycrawdads.com or by calling (828) 322-3000.
