Brigade releases two as training camp gets into full swing

February 7, 2007 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Kansas City Brigade News Release

Kansas City, Mo. (Feb. 7) - What started as an intense three-day mini camp is now an extremely competitive training camp that has already claimed two casualties. The Brigade today announced that the team has released quarterback Chris Sanders, who started eight games in 2006, and waived Arena Football rookie wide receiver Talman Gardner, formerly of the NFL's Saints.

The battle for the starting quarterback position is now down to three with incumbent starter Ray Philyaw competing against AFL veteran Mike Bishop and former Chief Jonathan Quinn. At wide receiver, a group of players returning from 2006-Jerel Myers, James Jordan, Sam Simmons and John Booth-are battling newcomers Boo Williams and Charles Frederick.

Williams is new to the indoor game but had four successful seasons as a tight end with the Saints. Frederick is making the move up from arenafootball2 but has fit seamlessly in offensive coordinator Chris Siegfried's familiar offense. Siegfried coached Frederick and the Spokane Shock to the af2 title in 2006. The competition for spots at wide receiver is sure to last the duration of training camp.

The team enters the third straight day of a week of two-a-days with the focus on maintaining a strong work ethic and limiting injuries. Head coach Kevin Porter and his staff wants the entire roster available for a scrimmage between the Brigade and the Utah Blaze at Kemper Arena on Tuesday, Feb. 13. While the assistant coaches and many of the players are new to the Brigade, the scrimmage will tell just how much the team has progressed from the inaugural season.

A second scrimmage against the Arizona Rattlers is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 20. Training camp will end a short time later as final roster cuts must be made by Sunday, Feb. 25. An announcement about players being added to the training camp roster will be made this week.
