Bridgeport gets second straight shutout

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Nov. 8, 2015) - Christopher Gibson was able to follow Stephon Williams' lead and secured his first shutout as a Sound Tiger with 30 saves as Bridgeport was victorious over the Hartford Wolf Pack 1-0 on Sunday night at Webster Bank Arena.
This was the first time the Sound Tigers shutout an opponent 1-0 at home since February 18, 2007 when they blanked the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
Despite being outshot by 30-18, spectacular play by Gibson and Jesse Graham's quick shot led the team to another shutout win.
The Hartford Wolf Pack have had the opposite luck, having been shutout in three straight games.
Gibson started the game with some incredible saves while Bridgeport had yet to get a shot on goal. The first shot on goal was a close call by Ross Johnston but he could not convert. Hartford got close halfway through the first period with a shot that hit the post.
Johnston was sent to the box at 10:55 for roughing, but Hartford's Chad Nehring also sat for slashing. The Sound Tigers looked as if they had a power play on the 4-on-4 but could not score.
Ben Holmstrom was sent to the sin bin for interference and the Sound Tigers embarked on their first penalty kill of the night. The strong defense did not allow the Wolf Pack to get any shots on goal and the period concluded.
Bridgeport started off the second period with a flurry of shots that somehow did not result in a goal. The period continued uneventfully until a wrister by Marek Hrivik that resulted in a stellar pad save by Gibson.
At 13:00, Ryan Strome was called for slashing and the team returned to the PK. However, 55 seconds into the penalty kill, Hartford's Tanner Glass went to the box for high sticking Scott Mayfield and the Sound Tigers were able to leave the zone.
Right after the power play for the Sound Tigers expired, Graham got the lone goal of the game on a one-timer. Graham's third of the season was assisted by Ryan Pulock and Joe Whitney. The latter received his 16th point of season, which keeps him as the top AHL scorer.
In the third period, Whitney had a huge rebound opportunity, but Magnus Hellberg made a fantastic save to keep it a one-goal contest.
Gibson did the same thing on the other end, making another spectacular pad save on Brady Skjei. On the same play, Matt Carkner went to the box for slashing, but Gibson continued to stand on his head and maintained his shutout.
With just over a minute left in the game Hartford pulled Hellberg. Despite several attempts at the net, the Wolf Pack were unable to get the tying goal. Gibson finished with 30 saves with the shutout, while the penalty kill went 5-for-5.
The Sound Tigers look to continue their streak when they take on the Providence Bruins Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at Webster Bank Arena.
