BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Bridgeport goaltender Stephon Williams made 31 saves as the Sound Tigers defeated the Worcester Sharks 4-1 on Monday night at Webster Bank Arena.
The Sound Tigers had a tremendous opportunity to score early in the game, as Bridgeport's Dustin Jeffrey threw the puck to a wide-open Alan Quine in front of the Worcester net. Sharks' goaltender Troy Grosenick was able to kick the resulting shot aside, however, keeping the game scoreless. Bridgeport got another great scoring chance with about eight minutes remaining in the period, but despite getting numerous shots on goal and Grosenick sprawling on the ice, the Sound Tigers were unable to score.
The Sound Tigers broke through on a one-time slap shot from Ryan Pulock. The defenseman wired a shot that Grosenick got a piece of, but was unable to handle fully. The goal was Pulock's 17th goal of the season.
Worcester was able to responded just 18 seconds later. Gus Young fired a shot past Bridgeport goaltender Stephon Williams for his fourth tally of the season, tying the game up at one.
The rapid scoring pace continued, as Jeffrey scored over three minutes later. The forward was able to life the puck over a sprawling Grosenick while on a 2-on-1 with Scott Mayfield. The goal was Jeffrey's team-leading 23rd of the season.
A brawl erupted midway through the second period, as Bridgeport's Kevin Czuczman took a cross-checking penalty. Sound Tigers' forward Brett Gallant was issued a 10-minute misconduct and a game misconduct in addition to a five-minute-major and two-minute minor for fighting. This fight continued the high paced trend the game had been following, as the teams had been crushing each other with hits all night.
The Sharks nearly tied the game midway through the third period, but a stupendous diving stop by Williams on a John McCarthy shot kept the Sound Tigers in the lead.
Kael Mouillierat put the game away with just over five minutes remaining. On the power play with Worcester's Daniil Tarasov off for high sticking, Jeffrey slid the puck across the crease to Mouillierat, allowing the latter to tip the puck over Grosenick for his 22nd goal of the season.
Though the Sharks pulled Grosenick for an extra skater in an attempt to reduce the Sound Tigers' lead, the move backfired, as Carson McMillan scored an empty-net goal, increasing Bridgeport's lead to 4-1.
Williams played a great game, making 31 saves for the victory. Grosenick made 22 saves in the loss.
The Sound Tigers return to action on Friday, April 10 when they visit the Syracuse Crunch. Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m.
Notes: It was Frontier Communications night at Webster Bank Arena...Williams is 2-0 in the AHL, with a 1.52 goals-against-average...Jeffrey had his 13th multi-point game of the season...Pulock has three points in his last two games, with goals in both.
