Rockford RiverHawks News Release
LOVES PARK, Ill. - Another former Rockford RiverHawk is heading back to affiliated baseball.
The Milwaukee Brewers have signed left-handed pitcher Derrick Ellison, who spent the first half of the season with the Bridgeport Bluefish of the independent Atlantic League. Ellison pitched for the RiverHawks in 2004-05 and has previously been with the Seattle and Chicago Cubs organizations.
According to the Bluefish website, Ellison has been assigned to the Maryvale Brewers of the Rookie-level Arizona League.
Ellison, 29, has been playing independent-league baseball since 2001. In his second season with Rockford, the Mariners picked him up and he spent a month in the high Class A California League. He signed with the Cubs after last season, but was released in spring training.
Ellison was 1-1 with a save and a 1.42 earned-run average in 22 relief appearances for the Bluefish this season. Ellison struck out 27 in 25 1/3 innings and held Atlantic League hitters to a .195 average.
Ellison joins 2004 teammates Olmo Rosario (San Francisco), a shortstop, and Justin Dowdy (Oakland), another lefty reliever, in major-league affiliated baseball. Reed Dickert, who made two appearances late last year with Rockford, is in the Milwaukee organization at Class A West Virginia of the South Atlantic League.
The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 16th season. Advertising and ticket information is available by calling the box office at (815) 885-2255. Most games are broadcast live on WNTA (1330 AM) and the internet.
