Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Dewon Brazelton took a no-hitter into the eighth inning on his way to a complete-game, one-hit shutout, and Jack Cust clubbed two runs and compiled a career-high seven RBIs to lead the Portland Beavers to a 9-0 victory over the Fresno Grizzlies before 6,098 Friday night at PGE Park.
It wasn't until there were two outs in the top of the eighth that Brazelton, celebrating his 26th birthday, gave up a hit. Pinch-hitter Adam Shabala's lazy single to right broke the no-hit bid for Brazelton, who won his first game of the season.
Brazelton (1-3) struck out seven and allowed four walks in Portland's first nine-inning shutout since Justin Germano dealt a four-hitter against Sacramento, July 19, 2005. It was just the second complete game of Brazelton's five-year career.
The gem came one week to the day after Ryan Meaux, Aquilino Lopez and Cla Meredith combined on the first perfect game in the 91-year history of the franchise.
The headliner on any other night, Cust belted a three-run shot in the second inning and capped the five-run fifth inning with an opposite-field grand slam, the third bases-loaded blast hit by a Portland batter this season.
Paul McAnulty was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for Portland (34-34). Jon Knott drove in the Beavers' final run in the seventh.
James Garcia (5-3) struck out nine over 4 2/3 innings for Fresno, but he yielded eight runs on eight hits to take the loss.
The Beavers play host to the Grizzlies (27-40) again Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
NOTES: Right-hander Jared Wells, the Padres 2005 Minor League Pitcher of the Year, arrived in Portland Friday afternoon and will be activated for Saturday's start against the Grizzlies ... before the game, Bobby Hill was placed on the disabled list (retroactive to June 14) with a strained left hamstring. Infielder Ray Chang was transferred to Portland from Class A Eugene to take his place.
