Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Colorado Springs - The Colorado Springs Sky Sox scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and cruised to a 10-4 win over the Tucson Sidewinders on Saturday night at Security Service Field. The loss is just the second for the Sidewinders in their last 14 games.
Jeff Salazar had four hits and Jason Smith and Luis Gonzalez drove in three runs apiece to lead the Sky Sox to the win.
Dustin Nippert was tagged with just his second loss of the season. Nippert (8-2) lasted just 3 2/3 innings and allowed nine hits and eight earned runs. He has worked a combined 7 2/3 innings in Colorado Springs this year and allowed 16 hits and 15 runs.
Salazar led off the bottom of the first with a single and advanced to second on a Kaz Matsui walk. After Jeff Baker flied out to center, Nippert walked Ryan Shealy to load the bases and Smith walked to bring home the first run. Gonzalez then doubled high off the wall in left to make it 4-0 and one out later, Sean Barker tripled to right center to cap the first inning scoring.
The Sky Sox scored three more times in the third to push the advantage to 8-0. Smith's two run single chased Nippert.
Jon Asahina picked up the win with 6 2/3 innings of strong pitching. Asahina (3-5) gave up just two runs on six hits. He struck out 5 and walked two.
Tucson finally got on the board in the seventh. Chris Carter's second home run in as many nights made it a 9-2 game, and the Sidewinders scored two in the ninth before Stephen Drew struck out with the bases loaded to end the game.
The Sidewinders and Sky Sox play game three of their series on Sunday afternoon at 12:05 Tucson time. Right-hander Adam Bass (3-0 3.81) will start for Tucson against lefty Zack Parker (2-4 5.73). The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 11:50am.
