JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Mississippi Braves held off a late Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp rally to win, 4-3 in seven innings, before overcoming a no-hit start by Jacksonville right-hander Jordan Yamamoto in 1-0, seven-inning Mississippi victory and doubleheader sweep in front of 4,760 at Budweiser Thirsty Thursday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
In Game 1, Jacksonville shortstop Joe Dunand hit a first-inning RBI single to put the Jumbo Shrimp (25-40 second half, 53-80 overall) ahead, 1-0. Mississippi center fielder Cristian Pache hit a third-inning RBI single and scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error by catcher Rodrigo Vigil. Jacksonville right fielder John Norwood hit a game-tying solo home run to right field in the fifth inning. Rain halted play for one hour and five minutes in a 2-2 tie before the sixth inning, ending five-inning starts by Jacksonville left-hander McKenzie Mills, and Mississippi left-hander Michael Mader (6-3).
When play resumed, the Braves (36-28, 65-69) took the lead with four straight two-out singles in the sixth inning against Jumbo Shrimp right-hander Kolton Mahoney (3-9). First baseman Tyler Marlette and third baseman Jonathan Morales hit RBI singles. Right-hander Josh Graham held the 4-2 lead until the seventh inning, when he allowed a run on a single and three walks. Left-hander Thomas Burrows struck out center fielder Monte Harrison with the bases loaded to end the game.
In Game 2, Yamamoto pitched six no-hit innings with nine strikeouts, hitting a batter for the only baserunner. In the seventh inning, Demeritte hit a one-out triple off right-hander Tommy Eveld (2-1) and scored when third baseman Luis Valenzuela won a two-out race to first base with Jacksonville first baseman John Silviano. Left-hander Justin Kelly (1-0) pitched the final 2 2/3 innings for the Braves, stranding a runner at third base in the fifth inning and one at second base in the seventh.
UP NEXT: The Jumbo Shrimp continue their season-ending series with Mississippi at 7:05 p.m. Friday, when Jacksonville right-hander Nick Neidert (11-7) is scheduled to face Braves left-hander Kyle Muller (4-0).
