DANVILLE – The Braves' (39-25) offense pounded the Cardinals' (33-33) pitching staff Saturday evening at Legion Field to inch closer to a division title.

Danville expanded its lead in the East Division to 1.5 games with the victory, combined with West Division Champion Greeneville's 10-0 win over Pulaski at Historic Calfee Park. Two games remain in the regular season.

The D-Braves bats jumped all over Johnson City starter John Powell to put the game away early. Danville scored six runs off Powell, who dropped to 2-2 with the loss, within the first two innings of the ballgame.

Offensive standouts for Danville include right fielder Brandon Jones, who had two hits and two RBI; left fielder Mark Jurich, who had a double and five RBI; and designated hitter Cole Armstrong, who had a home run and three RBI.

Starter Chris Vines picked up the win for the Braves to improve his record to 6-3 in 2004. Vines has won his last five starts and has only allowed two earned runs during that span.

Johnson City and Danville play again tomorrow in game two of the three-game series at Legion Field. Probable starters for the 4 p.m. matchup are Luis Atilano (4-1, 4.47 ERA) for Danville and Justin Brown (2-3, 5.40 ERA) for Johnson City.

BRAVES BEAT: The Danville Braves Booster Club will present their 2004 team awards, as voted by the fans, 30 minutes prior to the start of Sunday's 4 p.m. game against the Johnson City Cardinals.
