Worcester Bravehearts News Release
WORCESTER, Mass. - The Martha's Vineyard Sharks have been one of the only thorns in the side of the Worcester Bravehearts this season.
With a 7-1 defeat of the Worcester Bravehearts on July 10 at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field, the defending Futures Collegiate Baseball League champions are the only team that has not lost a game to Worcester this season.
Sharks catcher Jon Mayer hit two home runs to finish 2-4 with 3 RBI and lead the Martha's Vineyard offense to an 11-hit performance. Center fielder Ryan Kelly went deep in the fourth inning to finish 2-5 with two runs scored.
Bravehearts starter Sam Ross struggled in the early innings, as he took the loss and dropped to 0-3 after allowing four earned runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings pitched.
Martha's Vineyard got a strong outing from starter Soren Hanson, as he improved to 1-1 with seven innings pitched and only one run allowed. Hanson struck out eight Bravehearts and gave up only five hits total.
Despite combining for seven hits of their own, the Bravehearts could only muster up one run. In the seventh inning, Douglas, Mass., native Nate Pajka broke the shutout by knocking a 1-2 pitch from Hanson over the right field fence and onto the football side of the stadium.
The 19-10 Bravehearts will hit the road to face the Torrington Titans at 7 p.m. July 11 at Fuessenich Park in Torrington, Conn.
