Iowa Barnstormers News Release

DES MOINES -- Iowa Barnstormers Head Coach John Gregory today announced that former Coe College and Colo-Nesco High School standout Joe Brannen will start at quarterback for the Barnstormers Saturday against division rival Quad City Steamwheelers.

"The team and coaching staff is excited to have Joe under center. He is a natural leader and field general who gives our talented receivers a chance to make plays and win ballgames," said Coach Gregory. "Joe has the confidence of his teammates and all of us are looking forward to delivering our first win to the Barnstormers fans."

Brannen, a three-year starter at Coe College, sits atop the school's record book in numerous categories as Coe's all time leader in career passing yards, career pass completions, and career passing attempts, and holding many other career, season and single game records.

The honors received by Brannen during his record-setting career at Coe include two First Team All-Conference selections (2003, 2004), 2004 Second-Team All West Region QB, 2004 Iowa Conference MVP, 2004 participant in the Division III All-Star Game; and the 2004 Coe College Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year

Brannen, who has come off the bench in the Barnstormers first two games, has played well in his first career arena football contests. Through two games, Brannen has thrown for five touchdowns, ran for one touchdown, has completed 52 percent of his passes, and thrown for 299 yards.

Brannen replaces Davon Vinson, who started the season as the Barnstormers first-string quarterback. Vinson, who played for Coach Gregory last year in Arkansas, has since left the team for undisclosed reasons.

The Barnstormers travel to the Quad Cities Saturday for a 7 p.m. match-up with Midwest Division rival Quad City Steamwheelers at the i Wireless Center in Moline, Illinois. Barnstormers fans can catch all the action live on the radio at ESPN AM 1700 The Champ or broadcast online on the Barnstormers Video Network found at www.theiowabarnstormers.com.
