Fort Worth Brahmas News Release

NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas (December 21)- In an evening where the Brahmas could sink or swim in the Northeast division, Texas sunk fast as they lost to the Mississippi RiverKings Friday night at the DeSoto Civic Center, 6-3.

The Brahmas were in penalty trouble early when defensemen Chris Mann and Justin Kinnunen were sent to the penalty box. Though they were able to successfully fight off Mississippi powerplay attempts, Texas was unable to convert on a powerplay opportunity of their own when Bernie Chmiel took a slashing call at the 5:18 mark. Instead, the Brahmas and goaltender David Cacciola gave up two shorthanded goals in the first from Louis Dumont and Aaron Davis.

Tyler Skworchinski and linemates Anders Strome and Chris Thompson led the Brahmas charge as Skworchinski scored his fifth goal of the season. Mississippi's offense was not done for the period as forward Steve Slonina put the RiverKings up 3-1. The winding minutes of the first belonged to Brahmas defenseman Eric Main as he scored his first goal of the season at the 17:23 mark from Grant Jacobsen and Chris Mann. The teams headed to their locker rooms with Mississippi ahead, 3-2.

No scoring was seen in the second, but it was a busy period for special teams as eight penalties were called including Texas' Greg McConnell and Mississippi's tough guy Steve Makway. The highlight of the period was the Brahmas success on the penalty kill.

Mississippi came out in the final period and scored two unanswered goals resulting in Brahmas Head Coach Dan Wildfong to enforce a goalie change, pulling Cacciola in favor of Jim Healey. Cacciola played 45:00 minutes and had 19 saves from 24 shots.

Texas defenseman continued to showcase their offensive skills when Justin Kinnunen shot a goal past Sebastien Centomo with a feed from Brahmas captain Blair Manning putting the Texas within 2.

With just over five minutes remaining, Derek Landmesser and the RiverKings shattered all Brahmas hopes of a comeback as he scored a powerplay goal over Jim Healey. Mississippi defeated Texas 6-3, dropping the Brahmas record to 13-9.

The Brahmas will play Mississippi again tomorrow evening for a 7:05 PM start. The game can be seen on CHL Network. Texas' next home game is December 28 against the Odessa Jackalopes at 7:05 PM.
