Brahmas can't hold on

The Fort Worth Brahmas third period struggles continued on Tuesday night, as the Brahmas failed to hold a late game lead and saw the Indianapolis Ice rally for a 2-1 win in CHL action at the Fort Worth Convention Center.

Fort Worth led 1-0 to start the third period after left wing Chad Woollard scored on a rocket slap shot at the 6:01 mark of the second period. Brahmas goaltender Erasmo Saltarelli had stopped all 18 Ice shots he faced in the first two periods of the game and it appeared as if Fort Worth was in a solid position for the win.

However, 4:55 into the final period, Ice center Dave Gilmore took a headman pass from Jared Dumba and split the Fort Worth defense at the Brahmas blueline. Gilmore took advantage of his breakaway by rifling a shot from between the circles over the glove hand of Saltarelli into the top corner of the net. Gilmore's tying goal sparked the Ice, and Indy pushed for the go ahead goal. When Fort Worth winger Derrell Upton was sent to the penalty box for interference at the 14:51 mark of the third, the Ice went on the powerplay. The Ice capitalized on their man advantage chance when Gilmore scored his second of the game when he stuffed the rebound of a Dumba shot past Saltarelli with just 3:55 remaining in regulation. Gilmore's goal would prove to be the game winner as the Brahmas could not mount a comeback.

The loss for the Brahmas pushed their winless streak to nine consecutive games (0-7-2). It was the third game in a row that Fort Worth could not hold a third period lead.

Outside of Gilmore's two scores, Saltarelli turned in fine performance in net for Fort Worth. He made 29 saves in the loss. Ice goaltender Jeff Sanger was one better than Saltarelli, stopping 31 of the 32 Fort Worth shots that he faced in the game.

Fort Worth's record falls to 14-34-9 with the defeat. The Ice improved to 33-21-3 and stayed in playoff position in the Northern Conference. Fort Worth will next be in action this Friday night, March 5, when they travel to New Mexico to take on the Scorpions.
