Charlotte Knights News Release
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) -- Boston Red Sox outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr., a 2016 American League All-Star, will begin a Major League Baseball rehab assignment tonight and take the field for the Pawtucket Red Sox as they face the Charlotte Knights at BB&T Ballpark. Joining Bradley Jr. with Pawtucket tonight will be infielder Josh Rutledge, who will also make a Major League Baseball rehab appearance. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. as the Knights and PawSox battle in a 7:05 p.m. game from Uptown Charlotte.
Bradley Jr. was a standout player at the University of South Carolina. The Richmond, VA native helped lead the Gamecocks to back-to-back national titles in 2010 and 2011. He was named the Most Outstanding Player in the 2010 College World Series.
Drafted by the Red Sox in the first round (40th overall) of the 2011 MLB June Amateur Draft, Bradley Jr. had a breakout season last year with the Sox. The 26-year-old outfielder hit .267 with 94 runs scored, 26 home runs, 87 RBIs, and nine stolen bases. He earned American League Player of the Week honors on May 15, 2016 and later was named as the 2016 May Player of the Month. Bradley Jr. is currently on Boston's 10-day disabled list as he recovers from a sprained right knee. He has appeared in four games this season with Boston and is hitting .286 (4-for-14).
Rutledge, 27, was originally drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the third round of the 2010 MLB June Amateur Draft out of the University of Alabama (Tuscaloosa). He has appeared in 333 games over parts of five seasons in the majors. He is currently on Boston's 10-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain.
Tickets for tonight's game are still available and can be purchased by phone at 704-274-8282, in person at the BB&T Ballpark Ticket Office, or online at charlotteknights.com. Pre-game radio coverage of tonight's 7:05 p.m. game starts at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Charlotte 730 AM and CharlotteKnights.com. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad and Knights long-time radio broadcaster Mike Pacheco will have the call for all of the action. The Knights will honor the rich tradition and history of the Negro Leagues tonight and welcome five former players to the ballpark. All current Knights players will wear #42 jerseys in honor of Jackie Robinson, who broke Major League Baseball's color barrier on April 15, 1947.
