Charlotte Knights News Release

UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC-- The Charlotte Knights returned home to BB&T Ballpark on Tuesday where they have played their best baseball of the season. That impressive play continued in game one of their series against the Pawtucket Red Sox.

Yoan Moncada led the bottom of the first inning off with a home run, Willy Garcia added a two-run shot in the inning, and the Charlotte Knights beat the Pawtucket Red Sox by a score of 3-1 in the opening game of their three-game series from BB&T Ballpark in Uptown Charlotte. The win improved the team's record to 5-0 at BB&T Ballpark this season and snapped an overall seven-game losing streak.

RHP Carson Fulmer (2-1, 4.24) started the game for the Knights and allowed just one run on five hits over six innings to earn the win. The Vanderbilt University product struck-out three batters and improved to 2-0 at BB&T Ballpark this season. Reliever Brad Goldberg tossed two scoreless innings to keep the Knights ahead by a score of 3-1. RHP Zack Burdi entered in the ninth inning and shut the door on the game to earn his second save of the season.

Moncada, Chicago's number one overall prospect, ripped the second pitch he saw for his third home run of the season. Two batters later, Garcia, who returned to the Knights from the Chicago White Sox before the game, roped a two-run home run over the left center field wall to give the Knights a 3-1 lead. Garcia's two-run home run was his third of the season with Charlotte. Other offensive contributors on Tuesday included outfielder Jason Bourgeois, who finished the game 2-for-3, and Nicky Delmonico, who went 3-for-4 with one run scored.

Boston Red Sox outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. and infielder Josh Rutledge both played for Pawtucket on Major League Baseball rehab assignments on Tuesday. Rutledge put the PawSox on the scoreboard in the first inning with a solo home run. Bradley Jr., a standout with the University of South Carolina, went 0-for-2 on the night.

Former Charlotte hurler Shawn Haviland (2-1, 3.38) started the game for Pawtucket and allowed three runs on nine hits over seven innings. The Harvard University product was saddled with his first loss of the season.

The two teams will continue their series on Wednesday at BB&T Ballpark. The Knights will send RHP Lucas Giolito (0-1, 7.56) to the mound against Pawtucket's RHP Hector Velazquez (0-0, 5.79). Pre-game radio coverage on Wednesday begins at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Charlotte (730 AM) and CharlotteKnights.com. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad and long-time radio broadcaster Mike Pacheco will have the call for all of the action of Wednesday's 7:05 p.m. game. Three-time All-Star Luis Tiant will be on hand to meet and greet fans starting at 6:00 p.m. when gates open.
