
Bradenton Sweeps Doubleheader

June 12, 2007 - Anderson, SC- The first ever doubleheader in South Coast League history was a win-win for Bradenton as the Juice won game one by a score of 3-2 and game two 8-3. Bradenton's great pitching continued in both games on Tuesday and the Juice's solid hitting helped Bradenton improve to 14-7 on the season.
In game one the Juice scored a run in each of the first three innings. With one out in the first inning Julius Thames doubled to left field. Two batters later Eddie Kim hit an infield single that Thames was able to score on.
In the second with one out Noah Peery walked, and then after a single by Jean Castro pitcher Ben Lovell singled to center field that plated Peery giving the Juice a 2-0 advantage.
In the third inning Thames led off with an infield single. Two batters later Eddie Kim singled to left field and Thames was able to score on the play due to an error by left fielder Travis Hundley.
With Bradenton leading 3-0 entering the Top of the 7th Steve Alverson allowed a one-out single to Jeury Espinal and then Brandon Davis walked. With two outs Ryan Pressley came in to pinch hit and he singled to right field cutting the Juice lead to 3-2. Alverson was able to strikeout the next hitter Travis Hundley to end the ballgame. Both games were set as seven inning contests because it was a doubleheader.
Ben Lovell (3-0) got the victory for the Juice pitching 5 innings, allowing 0 runs on 1 hit, walking 3, and striking out 3 batters. Ken Salyer (0-1) took the loss pitching 4 innings, allowing 3 runs, 1 earned, walking 2, and striking out 2. Steve Alverson picked up his league leading 5th save of the season.
The Juice bats came out firing in game two. In the Bottom of the 1st Luke Barganier led off with a single to left field and two batters later Al Corbeil smacked a triple to center field that scored Barganier. The next batter Eddie Kim hit a sacrifice fly to center field that plated Corbeil and put the Juice up 2-0.
Bradenton scored again in the Bottom of the 4th with Eddie Kim singling to left field with one out. Jean Castro came in to pinch run for Kim and after Castro advanced to third Noah Peery drove him home on a sacrifice fly to right field.
The 5th inning was when the Juice put the game away. Ten batters came to the plate with 5 runs being added to the Juice's total. Drew York led off with a walk and then Jonathan Ashworth got his first hit with the Juice as he laid down a perfect bunt single toward second base. With runners on first and second base pinch hitter Mikela Olsen singled to right field driving in York. The next batter Luke Barganier singled to plate Ashworth. Yet another single followed off the bat of Julius Thames that scored pinch runner Rocky Collis who came in to run for Mikela Olsen. Al Corbeil followed with another single to center field that drove in Barganier and then Nick Corbeil singled to left field that scored Thames. Bradenton scored 5 runs on 6 consecutive singles to break the game open.
Anderson did score a run in the Top of the 6th and they tacked on two runs on three hits in the 7th.
Normally a reliever Travis Kane (2-0) started and got the win for Bradenton pitching 5 innings, allowing 0 runs on 3 hits, walking 1 batter, and striking out 5. Domingo Gomez (0-2) takes the loss for Anderson pitching 4 innings, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits, walking none, and striking out 1.
Bradenton has won 7 straight games and 7 of 8 so far on the road trip. The Juice continue play on Thursday at 7:05 when the Foxhounds and Juice resume Saturday's game that was suspended in the Bottom of the 10th due to rain. The two clubs will then follow with the regularly scheduled contest as a 7-inning game.
