Foxhounds Even Series With Peanuts

June 12, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
South Georgia Peanuts News Release

The South Georgia Peanuts, presented by Security Bank, lost on Tuesday night to Aiken as the series was evened up at one apiece. The evening was an eventful one as the two teams endured a rain delay for the second night in a row. South Georgia had the lead on two occasions but could not hold on for the win.

For the second night in a row, the Peanuts got things going in the first inning scoring two runs. Jasha Balcom scored from third on a wild pitch and Jon Zeringue scored from second on a Brandon Woolard single. The Peanuts would go up 3-0 in the fourth when Zeringue hit his first home run with the Peanuts.

Aiken tied the game up scoring one run in the fourth and two runs in the fifth inning before the "rain" came. Despite a delay that lasted close to an hour, very little rain actually fell. After the delay, Aiken took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth.

South Georgia was able to come back in the eight to score two runs. Mike Caruso had both an RBI and a run scored while Chris Demons scored the first run of the inning and Steve Garrabrants also drove home a run. The inning was very eventful as manager Wally Backman was thrown out of a game for the first time this season after an argument with the base-path umpire that started when Backman was coaching at third base. Backman was the second Peanut to be thrown out after Brandon Woolard was thrown out earlier in the game.

The Peanuts were unable to hold on to the game as Aiken scored two runs off of Jason Blanton in the bottom of the eighth. Zeringue was the only member of the Peanuts to have either more than one hit or run on the night.

Shannon Wirth started for the Peanuts and pitched well going five innings allowing three runs, only one of which was earned on four hits with four strikeouts. He did not go longer than five innings due to the rain delay.

Dumas Garcia will get the start in the rubber game of the series on Wednesday night. First pitch is set for 7:05. The game can be heard on "1450 The Fan" and online at southgeorgiapeanuts.com.
