Anderson Joes News Release

The Joes set one more historic record in the South Coast League on Tuesday, being one of the first two teams to every play in an SCL doubleheader.

However, Anderson also became the first team to ever get swept in a doubleheader, losing both contests to the Bradenton Juice, 3-2 in game one and 8-3 in game two.

Pitching and errors defined game one, as in Juice starter Ben Lovell allowing just one hit and no runs in five innings and the Joes defense committing two errors that led directly to Bradenton runs. Julius Thames led the way for the Juice, going 2-for-3 and scoring two runs, each of them on the two errors by Anderson.

Lovell improved to 3-0 on the year with the win. Ken Salyer, a newcomer for the Joes, made his first professional start and lasted four innings, allowing just one earned run, six hits and two walks while striking out two. He took the loss, though, as Anderson could not recover from the two

costly errors. Steve Alverson earned his fifth save of the year in shutting the door, although Ryan Pressley hit a pinch-hit, two-run single for the Joes in the top of the ninth to make the final score 3-2. In game two of the doubleheader, Bradenton combined tremendous starting pitching with explosive offense, highlighted by a five-run fifth inning in which the Juice knocked six hits and batted around. Anderson countered with three runs late in the game, and were led by Jake Wheeler's 2-for-3 night in which he also scored.

Travis Kane, making his first start of the year after seven bullpen appearances, pitched five shutout innings for the Juice, allowing just three hits and striking out five to imrpove his record to 2-0. Domingo Gomez took the loss for Anderson, giving up three runs in just four innings of work to start the game, dropping his record to 0-2. Anderson saw its record dropped to 5-18, while Bradenton improved to 14-7 with a current seven-game winning streak.

The Joes have an off day on Wednesday, then they welcome the Charlotte County Redfish for a three-game series beginning Thursday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
