Bowie trio no-hits Curve

Altoona Curve News Release

Altoona, PA- Three Bowie pitchers combined to no-hit the Altoona Curve in a 2-0 win at Blair County Ballpark Thursday night in the opener of a four-game series.

Dave Crouthers tossed the first seven hitless frames and Andy Mitchell and Jacobo Sequea followed suit as the Baysox' trio combined on the sixth no-hitter in the 12-year history of the Bowie franchise. Ironically, the only other time that the Curve had been no-hit previously came at the hands of the Baysox. On April 19, 2000 Bowie pitchers Sean Douglass and Jimmy Hamilton held the Curve without a hit over seven innings in a 5-0 victory.

Crouthers (8-8) was lifted after throwing 108 pitches through seven innings. The right-hander walked four and struck out six, but worked several deep counts resulting in him having to leave the game without the opportunity to make individual history.

The final out the game produced some controversy as Nate McLouth hit a dribbler up the third base line against Sequea that was barehanded by third baseman Kris Wilken, who threw to first base off-balance. Though it appeared McLouth had beaten the throw, he was called out by the first base umpire, thus preserving the no-hitter.

Bobby Bradley (4-3) gave up just one run on four hits in five innings of work, but was saddled with a tough-luck defeat--his second in as many starts. Elio Serrano gave up the other Bowie run on a Gary Cates RBI single in the seventh.

Not only was the Curve held hitless, but Thursday's shutout loss marked the fourth time in the last eight games that Altoona has been blanked. Despite the loss, the Curve (74-49) held on to its 6 1/2 game first-place lead in the Southern Division after second-place Erie lost to Reading on Thursday night.

Bowie (63-62), meanwhile, moved to within 5 1/2 games of the final playoff spot in the Southern Division with the win and Erie's loss.

The two clubs will matchup again on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. in the second game of the four-game set. Altoona will send right-hander Matt Peterson (9-4, 3.47) to the hill for his first start at Blair County Ballpark. Peterson will be opposed by 19-year old Bowie right-hander Hayden Penn, who will be making his Double-A debut.

GAME NOTES: The Curve's magic number to clinch an Eastern League playoff spot remains at 7... Tom Evans' team-high 12-game hitting streak was snapped and Thursday's game marked the first time in his 16 games with the Curve that he failed to reach base safely... Ronny Paulino drew an eighth inning walk to extend his on-base streak to 23 games... Nate McLouth walked in the seventh to mark the 40th time in 41 games that he reached base safely
