New York Boulders News Release
(Pomona, NY) - The Rockland Boulders welcomed fans to the 2015 season with excitement on and off the field. The pregame festivities - the Craft Beer Fest - led into a Boulder performance that showed signs of rust and promise. Ultimately, the Boulders high-powered offense was enough to etch out the first win of the season, defeating the NYPD 11-7 in 8 innings.
The Boulders were able to shake off an early deficit by scoring a run in each of the first 3 innings off the bats of Giuseppe Papaccio, Charlie Law, and Steve Nyisztor. However, in the bottom of the 3rd, the Boulders were unable to take advantage of some timely hitting when a base running error caused Nidiffer and Nyisztor to be caught together on 3rd base.
Min Hur came in for starting pitcher Richard Salazar in the 4th and the NYPD squad was then able to take advantage of some power hitting as back-to-back doubles helped bring in 2 runs. Things wouldn't get easier in the 5th as Hur was lit up for four more runs giving the NYPD a 7-3 lead. The Boulders were only able to get one back off a sac fly from Will Walsh in the bottom half despite loading the bases with one out.
Nathaniel Roe replaced Hurr to start the 6th but it was Joe Maloney who sparked the Boulders offense and tied the game at 7 by knocking one into the Short Porch for a three run blast. Maloney, who had 17 homeruns last year, kept the Boulders bats alive in the bottom of the 7th with an RBI double that contributed to a four run inning. Roe would retire the side in the 8th and that would be where the two sides called it a game.
The Boulders look to build on the strong start when official Can-Am play starts Thursday, May 21st as they take on the Trois-Rivieres Aigles at Provident Bank Park.
