August 4, 2015 - American Association (AA)
Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
LAREDO, TX- The Sioux Falls Canaries (28-39) scored three runs in the top of the second inning, and received six shutout innings from starting pitcher Stephen Bougher to secure the 3-2 win over the Laredo Lemurs (35-32) at Uni-Trade Stadium on Monday night.
Bougher (3-3, 4.68 ERA) put together one of his best starts of the season, holding one of the top offenses in the American Association scoreless over six innings. The right-hander didn't give up his first hit until there were two-outs in the bottom of third, and didn't allow a runner to reach third-base until the bottom of the fifth.
Bougher's only jam of the night came in the fifth inning after battling lead-off batter Brian Peterson, who saw 13 pitches, including eight straight foul balls before reaching base on a walk. The Papillion, NE native walked two total batters in the inning, and gave up a two-out single to D'Vontrey Richardson before Chris Elder grounded out to end the inning.
Bougher came back out to work a quick 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the sixth inning, finishing his day with 110 pitches, 63 for strikes.
LHP Josh Ferrell was the first out of the bullpen for the Birds', but struggled with his command, allowing a pair of walks, and a single to load the bases before recording his only out on Ty Morrison strikeout. James Jones replaced Ferrell in the seventh, but allowed a pair of runs two score, both charged to Ferrell in the inning.
Cameron McVey and Chase Johnson closed the door in the eighth and ninth, each tossing a scoreless inning in relief. Johnson earned his 11th save of the season, one night after suffering his third blown save of the year.
The Canaries only offense of the night came in an eight at-bat top of the second inning against Laredo's starting pitcher Henry Garcia (3-5, 3.20 ERA). Brian Humphries extended his hitting streak to 11 games after collecting a lead-off single, and later scored the first of two runs on an Angel Chavez two-run double to left-center. Chavez would later score the eventual winning run on an RJ Perucki RBI single.
Chavez had his best night in a Canaries uniform, going 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, and has now hit safely in his first five games with the Birds'.
Bougher earned his third win of the season, and his first since June 17th when he defeated the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks 7-3 at Newman Outdoor Stadium.
The Series wraps up on Tuesday night with RHP Jeremy Strawn (2-9, 4.83 ERA) toeing the rubber against his former team at 7:35 PM. Strawn was the American Association Rookie of the year in 2014 while playing with Laredo, finishing the season with a perfect 9-0 record, and 3.17 ERA.
