Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
Joplin, MO August 3, 2015- The Gary South Shore RailCats rode the left arm of Renee Solis and a red hot offense to take down the Joplin Blasters 12-1 Monday night at Joe Becker Stadium. Following on the heels of lefty Chuck Fontana, who on Sunday night worked four scoreless innings fellow lefty Solis had his best outing of the season.
Solis gave up one run a solo homerun to Jake Taylor that tied the game in the fifth but he allowed only three more hits on the evening to go with three strike outs to get his first road win on the season. The San Antonio native retired the first 10 of 11 batters he faced before a one out walk in the fourth. His best work might have been the sixth when the Blasters had two on with no outs but Solis was able to get the next three including a double play ball back to the mound.
While Solis was in command the RailCats offense took the lead in the first inning off of Joplin lefty Josue Montanez. Drew Martinez doubled with one out part of a three hit night for the Cats right fielder. Jon Jones moved him to third with a ground ball to first. Jose Sermo reached on catcher's interference to bring up Brandon Thomas. Thomas hit a solid single to left and it was 1-0.
The RailCats had the bases loaded with one out in the fifth but could not add to their lead. Joplin tied it in the bottom of the inning on the homer from Taylor. But then the RailCats came alive at the plate. Thomas was hit by a pitch from Montanez and Adam Taylor reached on an error at first by Jake Taylor. Roger Bernal popped out in foul territory at first for the first out. Michael Vaughn then took a 3-1 offering to left center field to score both Thomas and Taylor. Alex Hernandez then hit his second homerun of the series a deep blast to left that made it 5-1.
The RailCats then pushed the pedal down harder in the seventh. Facing reliever Matt Parish the South Shore got a leadoff walk from Jon Jones and a single by Jose Sermo. Brandon Thomas also drew a walk that brought up Adam Taylor. The South Carolina native cleared the bases with a smashed double just staying fair down the right field line. The RailCats now had an 8-1 lead.
With one out Michael Vaughn hit an RBI single and was followed by Alex Hernandez who hit an RBI double and it was 10-1. JD Pulfer added a sac fly to make it 11- 1 as the RailCats picked up six runs on five hits. The RailCats got another rin in the eighth with an RBI single for Roger Bernal.
