Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio - The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy Health, fell behind early on Tuesday night at Sprenger Healthcare Stadium and were never able to recover, as they dropped the series opener to the Schaumburg Boomers, 7-1.
The loss for the Crushers (20-14) was their fifth in their last seven games at home, while the victory for the Boomers (17-16) was their fifth in a row against the Crushers.
The Boomers forced Lake Erie starter Alex Romero (3-3) to throw 32 pitches in the first inning, and they scored the game's first run on Collin Ferguson's sacrifice fly to left which brought Jack Parenty home.
Schaumburg used a trio of two out doubles in the top of the third inning to plate two more runs. After Romero got Kenny Towns to ground into a 6-4-3 double play, Ty Moore, Sean Godfrey and Ferguson hit back-to-back-to-back doubles. Godfrey's double plated Moore and Ferguson brought Godfrey home on his two-bagger just moments later to give the Boomers a 3-0 lead.
The Boomers added another run in the top of the fourth when Towns drove Zack Weigel home on a sacrifice fly, but the Crushers answered with their first run in the bottom of the inning. Sean Hurley walked with one out, and came around to score on Doug Trible's two out RBI double to right.
However, the Boomers answered in the next half inning, plating two more runs. The first three batters of the inning reached safely, and Weigel belted a base hit with the bases loaded to bring both Godfrey and Ferguson home to give the Boomers a 6-1 lead.
The Boomers added one more run in the top of the ninth inning when Godfrey scored on a wild pitch.
Darrell Thompson (2-0) came on in relief to get the victory, allowing just a run on a hit while fanning two batters over 2.1 innings of work. Romero took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits and struck out two over 3.1 innings of action.
Aaron Hill paced the Lake Erie offense, going 2-for-4 with a double and a base hit. Kevin LaChance went 1-for-4 with a double, and has now reached safely in eight straight games.
The Crushers will continue their three game series against the Schaumburg Boomers at Sprenger Healthcare Stadium on Wednesday night. Right-hander Juan Perez (1-0, 5.01) gets the start for the Crushers and the Boomers will counter with lefty Gunnar Kines (1-1, 7.13). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
