
Bonifacio Joins Smokies on MLB Rehab Assignment

HUNTSVILE, Ala. - The Chicago Cubs announced a transaction that impacts their Double-A affiliate Tennessee Smokies roster prior to tonight's series opener against the Huntsville Stars at Joe W. Davis Stadium in Huntsville, Alabama.
Cubs utility player Emilio Bonifacio has joined the Smokies as part of his Major League Rehab Assignment. Prior to being placed on the Disabled List with a strained oblique, the 29-year-old posted a .261 average (63-241) with 29 runs, ten doubles, three triples, one homer and 17 RBI in 61 games with the Cubs. Through the first three games of his rehab assignment with the Mesa Cubs, Bonifacio has compiled a .300 clip (3-10) with one run scored.
Bonifacio has recorded a career batting average of .262 (604-2303) as part of his eight-year Major League career, adding 324 runs scored, 11 home runs, 147 RBI and 151 stolen bases. The utility player played for the Mobile BayBears during the 2007 Southern League campaign, accumulating a .285 mark (157-551) with 84 runs, two homers, 40 RBI and 41 steals in his 132 contests with the BayBears.
Tennessee's active roster stands at 25, in addition to Bonifacio on his Major League Rehab Assignment, and a revised roster is attached.
The Smokies are set to begin a five-game set this evening with the Huntsville Stars, the Double-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers at Joe W. Davis Stadium in Huntsville, Alabama. Tennessee is expected to give the ball to RHP Matt Loosen (4-3, 5.47), while the Stars are slated to counter with RHP Drew Gagnon (5-4, 3.26) for the opening matchup of the series.
The club will return to Smokies Stadium on Monday, July 21 for a five-game series against the Mississippi Braves, the Double-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves.
