Bombers sign Lowry, Olynick

WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers added to their Canadian quota today with the signing of non-import fullback Cory Olynick and non-import linebacker David Lowry.
As per team policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.
Olynick (5-10, 210, Regina '03 DOB: March 27, 1977 in Regina, Sask.) is a familiar name to fans of the Big Blue. A fifth round (42nd overall) pick of the Bombers in the 2003 Canadian College Draft, he made his CFL debut in 2004. He played in 10 games that season and registered two special teams tackles.
Olynick was having an outstanding training camp with the Bombers in 2005 until he suffered a torn Achilles tendon that forced him to miss the rest of the year. He was inactive in 2006.
"Cory Olynick's career was just beginning when he suffered that injury," Bombers G.M. Brendan Taman said. "We are anxious to see what he is capable of in training camp."
Olynick was a member of the powerhouse Regina Rams university football program. He was with the Rams when they advanced to the 2000 Vanier Cup championship in Toronto against the Ottawa Gee-Gees.
Lowry (6-3, 235, Alberta '06, DOB: Jan. 29, 1981 in Lethbridge, Alta.) was considered one of the top university prospects in the country when he was chosen in the second round of the 2005 CFL College Draft by the B.C. Lions. He attended training camp with the Lions in 2005 and again in 2006 before returning to the Golden Bears.
Lowry was a two-time winner of the Canad West President's Trophy as the top defensive player in the Canada West Conference (2004 and 2005). He was also a two-time nominee for the national President's Trophy awarded by the CIS.
In 2006, he was among the Golden Bears' defensive leaders with 51 total tackles, three pass knockdowns and one fumble recovery in eight games. He had arguably his best season as a Golden Bear in 2004 when he was twice named the CIS Player of the Week and was a first-team All-Canadian after registering 62 tackles, four sacks and one interception.
"David Lowry had a stellar university career and we hope he can come in and push for a non-import roster spot," Taman said.
