WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers beefed-up their defensive backfield today with the signing of cornerback Robert Bean.

As per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Bean (6-0, 185, Mississippi State '99, DOB: Jan. 6, 1978 in Atlanta, Georgia) joins the Blue Bombers after spending four seasons in the NFL.

"It's no secret that changes needed to be made to our defensive unit," said Bombers G.M. Brendan Taman. "The addition of Robert Bean will provide a more competitive mix in our defensive secondary for training camp."

Bean broke into the NFL in 2000 as a member of the Cincinnati Bengals. He appeared in 12 games with the Bengals that season, accumulating 23 defensive tackles, two assisted tackles, one interception and five passes defended. In 2001 he dressed for 15 with the Bengals and was credited with 41 defensive tackles and six assisted tackles.

Bean signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars the following season and appeared in five games in 2002. He finished with two defensive tackles and one pass defended.

In 2004, Bean attended training camp with the B.C. Lions, but didn't make the Leos final roster. He later rejoined the team as a member of its practice squad. Bean signed with the Lions following a stint with the Arena League's L.A. Avengers. In 2005 he was briefly a member of San Jose of the Arena League.

Bean was a college teammate of recently-signed Bombers linebacker Barrin Simpson at Mississippi State.

"I was talking to Barrin Simpson and heard the team had a new coaching staff and they were starting with a clean slate," Bean said of coming to Winnipeg. "I wanted to come in and help change their game around.

"And I wanted a fresh start. It's going to be a challenge (playing in Canada). But I learned the game when I was in B.C. so I'm used to it."

The Blue Bombers officially open training camp SUNDAY, MAY 21 at Canad Inns Stadium.
