July 15, 2018 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Battle Creek Battle Jacks News Release

The Battle Creek Bombers (23-23) have been .500 four times this season with records of 16-16, 19-19, 20-20, 22-22 and now 23-23. The Fond du Lac Dock Spiders (27-19) came into Battle Creek for a weekend series after they swept the Bombers at C.O. Brown Stadium a week ago and swept the Kalamazoo Growlers the two nights prior.

Walter Talcott (5-3) got the start for Battle Creek while Jon Mierzwa (0-4) started on the mound for the Dock Spiders.

Talcott started the first three innings perfectly as he retired nine straight Dock Spiders in a row to start off the game. The Bombers offense answered back with run support that started in the first inning. Jordan Swiss hit a leadoff single and then stole second base to get himself in scoring position. Caleb Henderson did the rest after he blasted an RBI single to make it 1-0 Battle Creek.

The Bombers struck again in the second after a leadoff Mike Brown double to get things underway. Will Baker got on first with a walk and Brown stole third base in the meantime. Drake Osborn grounded out into a double play but Brown came across home plate during the action to make it 2-0 Battle Creek.

Talcott's perfect night came to an end in the fourth after the Dock Spiders used two hits and a walk to score a run and cut the deficit in half through the fourth.

Mierzwa retired the side in the bottom of the fourth and Talcott did the same in the top of the fifth before the Bombers added another run in the bottom half of the inning. Osborn hit a leadoff single and reached second on a fielder's choice that put Roman Trujillo out at first base. Alec Cargin got his first hit of the night on a full count, two out single that scored Osborn home to widen the margin to 3-1 in favor of the Bombers.

The sixth inning was equally good for Talcott and the Bombers as Walter got out of the top of the inning scoreless and the offense responded for a fourth time in the first six innings. Connor Bailey reached on an error which was followed up by a Mike Brown single. Brown stole second base and an error on the throw by the catcher Sam Cohen allowed Bailey to score and Brown to advance to third. Will Baker was at the plate while this all went down and he capitalized on the error by hitting a sacrifice fly to make it 5-1 Battle Creek.

Talcott's night ended after the sixth inning and the Dock Spiders cashed in on a run in the seventh and ninth but that was all they had in them to lose by a 5-3 final. Talcott's efforts earned him the player of the game after he pitched six innings, allowed just three hits and one run, all while striking out four Dock Spiders. Talcott was 0-2 against the Dock Spiders and earned his first win over Fond du Lac to get his record to 5-3 while winning four of his last five starts for the Bombers.

Battle Creek has now reached .500 for the fifth time in fourteen games. However, they will look to cross the .500 mark for the first time on the 2018 season as they attempt to sweep the Dock Spiders Sunday afternoon. First pitch for the eighth and final game between the Bombers and Dock Spiders is set for 1:05 PM (EST) on Sunday.
