Brazos Valley Bombers News Release
Kilgore, TX - After splitting a double header with the East Texas Pump Jacks on Friday, the Brazos Valley Bombers (38-13) rallied to defeat the Pump Jacks (20-32) 6-5 in a come-from-behind win on Saturday night.
"We fell behind there early in the first third of the game. We had some situations where we didn't execute and times where we did there towards the end," said head coach Curt Dixon. "It's what this team does, no matter what the situation is, you know the fight won't stop. You saw that tonight."
The Bombers were the first to score in the game when catcher Tucker Pennell crossed the plate after a hit by center fielder Blake Kopetsky in the second inning. The Pump Jacks would answer with one run of their own in the same inning and then another four in the third inning.
The Bombers answered the Pump Jacks with five runs to take the lead in the second half of the game. Kopetsky started the rally in the fourth inning with a single to bring first baseman G.R. Hinsley home.
Hinsley hit a single of his own in the fifth to bring shortstop Horacio Correa III across the plate. Correa brought third baseman Hunter Hagler home in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly.
Correa added two more RBI to his stat sheet in the eighth inning, bringing Hagler and second baseman Kolbey Carpenter home on a double. Those two runs would take the Bombers into the lead over the Pump Jacks, 6-5.
Tyler Nurdin started on the mound for the Bombers and put in four innings of work. Newcomer to the roster and Texas Aggie A.J. Minter stepped out of the bullpen for the first time for the Bombers and recorded three strikeouts in just over three innings. Jacob Lawrence and Cannon Chadwick were also on the relief staff for the night, helping the Bombers clinch the win over the Pump Jacks by not allowing any runs from the East Texas offense.
"We welcomed AJ Minter to the club and he came in there and put up those zeroes on the board for us and kept us there. And then Cannon Chadwick coming in and slamming the door there in the ninth." said Dixon when asked about the pitching staff and their role in the win.
The Bombers will face the East Texas Pump Jacks again on Sunday at Driller Park at 7:05 p.m. They will return back to Cellucor Field on Tuesday for the first of their final four regular season games before playoffs begin on Saturday, August 9.
