Bombers End Skid with 9th Inning Grand Slam
June 15, 2018 - Texas Collegiate League (TCL)
Brazos Valley Bombers News Release
Victoria, TX - After a home stand that did not provide the Bombers much in terms of positive momentum, tonight's game could serve as a turning point for the club to get back to their winning ways. The spark to tonight's victory is Robin Adames Jr, whose grand slam in the 9th gave the Bombers their first lead and kept the team in first place in the TCL.
The beginning of this game made it look like it would take double digits to win tonight's ball game after the Generals tallied 4 runs in the bottom of the 1st, with the Bombers responding with four of their own in the 2nd. The Generals would retake the lead in the second inning, 5-4, before the Bombers pitchers would settle into the game. The Generals would then add an insurance run in the bottom of the 8th inning to give the home team a two run lead.
The 9th inning began with a pair of controversial calls during the Zach Iverson at bat, the first being what appeared to be a hit batter being ruled as a foul ball by the home plate umpire. The second was on the dropped 3rd strike call, where the throw took the Victoria Generals off first base. On a close call, it was ruled Iverson beat the throw and the tag, causing ire from the Generals Manager about the call. Next, the Bombers would add a pair of base runners off of walks, giving them bases loaded with no outs. The next two batters would fly out to shallow right and strikeout, leaving the Bombers to their final out. Luckily, Robin Adames Jr. was up to the task as he crushed a pitch over the scoreboard in left field for a grand slam. The Bombers then closed out the game in the bottom of the inning with minimal drama to end the team's three game losing skid.
Manager Brian Nelson was excited for his team's performance facing adversity tonight, "I'm speechless, sometimes it just takes a big hit to get the monkey off our back. Robin delivered that tonight. I can't say enough about [pitcher] Cody Collins and his ability to show up every day and compete"
The Bombers will continue their road trip over the next three games, first facing the Victoria Generals tomorrow night, followed by the Texas Marshals in Dallas, Texas on the 16th and 17th. The Bombers will return home to face the Texas Marshals again on June 18th at Travis Field.
