The Battle Creek Bombers defeated the Wisconsin Woodchucks 6-1 Sunday afternoon at C.O. Brown Stadium, sweeping the two-game series. With the win, the Bombers improve to 29-28 on the season and 10-9 in the second half.
The Bombers got on the board early and never looked back. Center fielder Dean Miller led off the second inning with a single and advanced to second on a stolen base. Left fielder Daniel Jipping flew out to right field, advancing Miller to third on the play. Catcher Jacob Blunt flew out to shallow left field, allowing Miller to score to give the Bombers the 1-0 lead.
The Bombers added a run in the third inning. Right fielder Nick Poirier led off with a walk. After Daniel Patzlaff flew out, second baseman Jarrod Watkins hit a single to advance Poirier to second. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, and then another wild pitch scored Poirier to give the Bombers the 2-0 lead.
With two outs in the fourth inning, first baseman Christian Helsel reached on a walk. Designated hitter Storm Joop then hit a double, scoring Helsel to give the Bombers the 3-0 lead. Nick Poirier followed with a single to score Joop, giving the Bombers the 4-0 lead.
The Bombers added to their lead in the fifth inning. With two outs, third baseman Ryan Dorow hit a double. Dean Miller followed with a single to score Dorow and give the Bombers the 5-0 lead.
The Woodchucks would score a run in the seventh inning, but the Bombers would get the run back in the eighth. Dean Miller led off with a single and stole second base. After Daniel Jipping struck out, both Jacob Blunt and Christian Helsel walked to load the bases. Miller came home to score on a passed ball to give the Bombers the 6-1 lead, which would be the final score of the game.
Scott Sency picked up his fourth win of the year for the Bombers. He allowed one run on seven hits. He walked one batter and struck out 10, which is a season-high for him.
The Bombers now take on the Kalamazoo Growlers in a home-and-home doubleheader. Game one is Monday morning at 11:05 in Kalamazoo, and game two is Monday night at 7:05 at C.O. Brown Stadium.
