Idaho Steelheads News Release
BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads Hockey Club and the ECHL, announced today that Qwest Arena will be the site of the 2007 ECHL All-Star Game on January 17th. Boise Mayor David Bieter and ECHL Commissioner Brian McKenna joined Steelheads executives in making the announcement at the downtown Boise arena.
"The ECHL is pleased and proud to bring our showcase event to Idaho in 2007. The Steelheads, in their brief history in the ECHL, have not only won a Kelly Cup championship, but have established themselves as a flagship member of our league," said ECHL Commissioner Brian McKenna. "The All-Star Classic provides not only the game, but a three-day event with the skills competition, Fan Fest and various other activities in celebration of 10 years of professional hockey in Idaho."
Mayor Bieter said, "This is a great opportunity to highlight Boise and the Steelheads and I congratulate those who have worked so hard to make this announcement a reality. I'm confident the visiting players, team officials and fans will enjoy all that our community has to offer and I welcome them to Idaho's capital city."
Glenn Stanford, President of Block22 (owners of Qwest Arena, the Idaho Steelheads and the Grove Hotel) said, "We're delighted the ECHL and Rbk Hockey are giving us the opportunity to bring this event to our fans in Idaho. The game will feature the most talented up-and-coming hockey players from around the world, as well as give us an opportunity to involve local youth hockey players in a very exciting skills competition."
All-Star Game festivities include a reception where fans can meet the players, a skills competition featuring shooting, puck handling and skating contests, and the National Conference All-Stars against the American Conference's best.
"Rbk Hockey is very pleased to be the title sponsor of the ECHL All-Star Game. The ECHL, its member teams and its talented roster of players provide Rbk Hockey with an ideal platform to showcase our high-performance products," said Len Rhodes, Vice-President Global Marketing, Reebok. "Rbk Hockey's commitment to delivering breakthrough product innovation is clearly demonstrated through its 9K Pump Skate and 8K FitLite Helmet which are just two of the great products which help ECHL players perform at the top of their game."
Showcasing some of the top prospects in the ECHL, the 2006 All-Star Game had 21 rookies and 35 of the 41 players were playing in their first All-Star Game. Attended by representatives from both the National Hockey League and the American Hockey League, the All-Star Game has produced 28 players who have gone on to the NHL and there were five NHL assistant coaches in 2005-06 who had coached in an ECHL All-Star Game.
Since the Steelheads joined the ECHL in 2003-04, All-Star Games have been played in Peoria, IL (2004), Reading, PA (2005) and Fresno, CA (2006). The 2007 All-Star Game will mark the 15th in league's 18-year history.
The 2006 All-Star Game was televised live for the fifth year in a row and available in more than 80 million homes on The NHL Network, NHL Center Ice and America One, and was rebroadcast twice by OLN, the cable home of the National Hockey League. The audio broadcast was produced by NHL Radio and was available live on XM Satellite Radio, the nation's leading satellite radio service with more than six million subscribers.
The Steelheads will use the festivities to raise money and awareness for Bridges Community School, Idaho's first school serving the needs of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Autism is a brain disorder that affects an individual's ability to communicate, reason, or socially interact with others. The incidences of ASD are rising steadily and have doubled in Idaho since 2004.
Tickets will go on sale in the fall and several ticket packages will be available, priced from $15-35. Idaho Steelheads season ticket holders will be offered first right to buy their season seats for the game.
