Boise Hawks News Release
BOISE, Idaho - Austin Reed tossed five innings of one-hit shutout ball, as the Boise Hawks won their fourth game in a row, knocking off the Vancouver Canadians, 4-2, before 3,005 fans at Memorial Stadium.
With the win, the Hawks even their mark in the second half of the season - keeping their postseason hopes alive with two games remaining in the regular season.
Reed retired the first 11 men he faced and allowed just one base runner in his best outing of the year, striking out a career high seven men. Bryce Shafer got the final three outs for his 12th save - the first Boise pitcher since Bo Donaldson in 1997 to record more than 11 saves in a season.
The Hawks took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, as Rafael Lopez lined a two-out single, scoring on a Ryan Cuneo double. Boise would extend the lead to 3-0 in the second - as Javier Baez lined an RBI single and Zeke DeVoss walked with the bases loaded. DeVoss tripled in the fourth and scored on a Oliver Zapata sacrifice fly to push the Boise margin to 4-0.
Vancouver would cut the margin in half in the seventh on a Shane Opitz RBI groundout, scoring Jon Berti, who led off the inning with a triple, with Nick Baligod adding an RBI double. With the tying run at the plate, Andy Burns was robbed by Willson Contreras on a diving catch at third to end the inning.
Contreras went 2-for-4 for the Hawks, as all nine starters for Boise recorded at least one hit.
Game 4 of the series is tomorrow night, with Ben Wells meeting Aaron Sanchez at 6:45 p.m.
