Bobcats Score First, Can't Hold on against Thunderbolts 4-1

January 12, 2022 - SPHL (SPHL)
Vermilion County Bobcats News Release

The Bobcats and the Thunderbolts entered Friday night's game looking to find ways up the SPHL standings. Evansville sitting in 8th place while Vermilion County holds onto 10th in the league. Both teams have gotten off to less than stellar starts, but despite large roster turnover both sides have maintained competitive teams.

The two teams had not seen each other in over eight weeks, and it showed as the first period got underway. Neither side had a definitive advantage and what followed was back and forth hockey with each team taking their turn with the puck until a Bobcats penalty gave the Thunderbolts the first true advantage of the game. Ben Churchfield stood tall behind the Cats ever improving penalty kill. Though Evansville had the shot advantage the period ended in a one all tie.

The second period looked to be more of the same until the Bobcats Ray Pigozzi was able to bang home a rebound past Ryan Edquist off a Davide Asselin shot from the point. The Cats continued to put the pressure on, but in the last 1:36 both Hayden Hulton and Tanner Butler were able to beat Churchfield to give the Thunderbolts a 2-1 lead after two periods of play.

A one goal deficit going into the final 20 minutes of play seemed a challenge too far for the Bobcats who could not establish offensive zone possession which was made even more of an uphill climb after a 5 minute major penalty. The Cats couldn't find their footing and Zane Jones and Thomas Dockery both added to the Thunderbolts tally to make it a 4-0 final.

Ben Churchfield stopped 28 of 32 shots.

The Bobcats are back in action Saturday night against the Knoxville Ice Bears at 7:35pm eastern. Follow along on VCBobcats.com or on HockeyTV!
