D.C. United News Release

CHANTILLY, VA (December 4, 2003) – D.C. United midfielder Bobby Convey has been selected as a finalist for U.S. Soccer's 2003 Chevy Male Athlete of the Year award. Convey has been busy this year, splitting his time between three U.S. National Teams and D.C. United. His efforts have been recognized by U.S. Soccer and the 20-year-old now is in the running for one of U.S. Soccer's most prestigious awards. Voting for U.S. Soccer's four Chevy year-end awards (Male Athlete, Female Athlete, Young Male Athlete and Young Female Athlete) is currently underway at www.ussoccer.com. Fans around the world can vote once a day through Dec. 31st to help determine the winners. In addition to online voting, 100 votes will be compiled from members of the national media and U.S. Soccer representatives (from National Team coaches to the National Board of Directors). The winners will be announced at a press event in January.

"Being a finalist for this prestigious award is well-deserved for Bobby," said United Technical Director Dave Kasper. "He has had a solid year with the US National Team, Olympic Team and the U-20 Team and we are excited about his future with D.C. United."

The nomination is nothing new for Convey, as he took home the Young Male Athlete of the Year award one year ago. However, his increased effectiveness with the full Men's National Team, in addition to leading both the U-23's and U-20's, now finds the United veteran competing for the top prize, which includes a new Chevy Malibu or TrailBlazer.

Convey finished 2003 tied for the team lead in appearances for the U.S. Men with 15. He scored his first full international goal in the CONCACAF Gold Cup Third Place match and also contributed two assists on the year. Convey also regularly lent his services to the U-23 team and is now captaining the U-20 side that is fighting for a place in the second round at the FIFA World Youth Championships in the United Arab Emirates. He scored a goal in that side's first match, a 3-1 come-from-behind victory over Paraguay.

Convey's fourth season with United was a solid campaign. He played in 21 matches for the Black-and-Red, including his first ever playoff appearances on November 1st and 9th. Convey scored two goals and added one assist for five points.

Freddy Adu, who is set to officially join United at the 2004 MLS SuperDraft after signing a deal with MLS on November 18th, has been nominated for the Young Male Athlete award. His greatest contributions have been with the U-17 National Team, including scoring a hat trick in the team's first game of the 2003 U-17 World Cup this summer. He is also with the U-20 side in UAE that faces off with the Korea Republic tomorrow in search of a place in the next round of the tournament.

Broadcasting and P.A. Request: When speaking of the organization, please refer to the team as either "D.C. United" or "United," but not "the D.C. United" or "the United." We appreciate your cooperation.
