Boatmen Boost Backfield With Troy Davis

Mississauga - The Toronto Argonauts Football Club has bolstered its backfield by signing import RB Troy Davis to a practice roster agreement.

A dominant back in the CFL for years, Davis spent the majority of his career with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats where he was a three-time East Division All-Star and was also named a CFL All-Star (2004). The powerful halfback finished atop the CFL in rushing in 2002, 2003 and 2004 and rushed for 6,715 yards and 36 touchdowns in six CFL seasons. In 2005, Davis was traded to the Edmonton Eskimos where he became an integral part of their playoff run, which culminated with a Grey Cup win in 2005.

Before joining the CFL in 2001, Davis spent three years in the National Football League with the New Orleans Saints. Previous to his days with the Saints, Davis was a standout at Iowa State University, shattering numerous school records and earning runner-up for the Heisman Trophy in 1996. In addition, he became the first player in NCAA history to rush for over 2,000 yards in a season twice in a career.

Acquired: Signed as a free agent with Toronto on September 25, 2007.

2007: Released by Edmonton on February 23.

2006: Started 16 games at RB for the Eskimos, finishing the season with 190 carries for 1,060 yards and four touchdowns...Also had 67 receptions for 546 yards...Week 14, rushed for a season-high 189 yards on 22 carries in loss to Toronto...Week 15, carried the ball 18 times for 118 yards in loss to Toronto.

2005: Finished the season fourth in the CFL in rushing with 240 carries for 1,151 yards and five touchdowns...Started the first 13 games of the season at RB with Hamilton before being traded...Traded to the Edmonton Eskimos along with OL Dan Comiskey in exchange for WR Brock Ralph, DB Tay Cody and a first round pick in the 2006 CFL Canadian Draft (OL Cedric Gagne-Marcoux)...Appeared in four regular season games with the Eskimos, generating 359 yards and two touchdowns on 64 carries...2005 Playoffs Started at RB and generated 140 all-purpose yards in West Semi-Final win over Calgary...Started at RB in West Championship and recorded 56 all-purpose yards in win over B.C...Grey Cup Championship Started at RB and rushed 11 times for 68 yards en route to capturing his first Grey Cup versus Montreal.

2004: Named a CFL All-Star for the first time in his career...Named East Division All-Star...Started all 18 regular season games for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at running back...Finished the season with a career-best 1,628 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on 324 carries...Also made 40 receptions for 250 yards...2004 Playoffs Started at RB and recorded 109 yards on 18 carries in East Semi-Final loss to Toronto.

2003: Named an East Division All-Star...Started all 18 games at RB for the Ticats, registering 1,206 yards and five touchdowns on 227 carries...Also made 31 catches for 230 yards.

2002: Named an East Division All-Star for the first time in his career...Started 14 games at RB for Hamilton, carrying 230 times for 1,143 yards and six touchdowns...Also made 27 receptions for 221 yards and one touchdown.

2001: Signed as a free agent with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on June 18...Played in 12 games for Hamilton, starting six and rushed for 527 yards for six touchdowns and adding 122 receiving yards...2001 Playoffs Dressed at running back for both East Semi-Final and East Final, totalling 153 yards on 33 carries and 62 yards on nine receptions.

2000: Spent time with the Birmingham Thunderbolts of the XFL before being released after training camp.

1999: Played in 16 games with New Orleans alongside former Argonauts RB Ricky Williams, recording 20 carries for 32 yards and 7 receptions for 53 yards...Also returned 20 kickoffs for 424 yards (LG 35)...Entered free agency following the Saints' season.

1998: Dressed for 14 games for New Orleans, carrying 55 times for 143 yards and one touchdown... Also recorded 99 yards off 16 receptions.

1997: Drafted by the New Orleans Saints (NFL) in the third round (62nd overall) in the 1997 NFL Draft...Appeared in all 16 games with the Saints, finishing the year with 75 carries for 271 yards...Also added 13 receptions for 85 yards.

College: 1996 Named runner-up for the Heisman Trophy in a season that saw him become the first player in NCAA history to rush for over 2,000 yards in a season twice in a career...Led the nation in rushing with 402 carries for 2,185 yards and 21 touchdowns in 11 games with Iowa State...Ran for over 200 yards in a games five times throughout the year...1995 Became the fifth rusher in NCAA Division 1-A history to run for over 2,000 yards in a season...Led the nation with 2,010 yards rushing on 345 carries and 15 touchdowns...Set an NCAA sophomore single-season record with 2,446 all-purpose yards...1994 Played in nine games during his freshman year, carrying 35 times for 187 yards...Returned a kickoff 99 yards for a major versus Colorado to set the school record for longest return in school history and the first for Iowa State since 1976.

Personal: Troy is the son of Williams and Eular Webster. His brother, Darren, also played in the CFL, seeing time with Saskatchewan, Ottawa and Montreal...Competed in both football and wrestling while at Southridge High School in Miami where he was named the USA Today Player of the Year for the state of Florida.
