Blumel's Third Period Tally Leads Waterloo Past Dubuque

Dubuque Fighting Saints vs. the Waterloo Black Hawks

The Dubuque Fighting Saints couldn't muster enough offense late against the Waterloo Black Hawks as they fell 4-2. Matej Blumel scored his 22nd goal of the season roughly midway through the third period to give Waterloo a lead they wouldn't relinquish. The Fighting Saints had their four game winning streak snapped with the loss.
-Blumel, the USHL's leading goal scorer was active Friday night. He hit a post earlier in the game and then tallied the game winner. Blumel also leads the league in shots and he was around the puck often during the game.
-Matias Maccelli scored yet again for the Fighting Saints on a beautiful two on one snipe. The goal for Maccelli was his 18th of the season as the Fighting Saints left-winger simply continues to find ways on to the score sheet.
-Speaking of finding ways to score, Verners Egle continued his tear on Friday. Egle scored his 6th goal in the last 14 games. After going 20 games without a goal, Egle has found his scoring touch. Willie Knierim notched the assist on Egle's goal, giving him seven points in the last seven games.
-Waterloo played a rugged defensive game against the Fighting Saints. They made it tough for Dubuque to get in high scoring areas and when the Fighting Saints did, they made it tough to get clean shots off. Dubuque fired 25 shots on net.
-Jared Moe grabbed the win for Waterloo, as he moved to 12-7-2-1. Moe wasn't spectacular, but he made a couple great saves, including a sprawling right pad stop on Maccelli early in the game.
-Matthew Thiessen also looked good in net on the other side. He turned away 26 pucks, but was hit with the loss. Thiessen has played just two games in the last five for Dubuque and he looked fresh in net.
-Between the three games the two teams have played this season, this was by far the most defensively focused. The shot totals were much lower than what the two are used to. Waterloo has the most shots in the league and Dubuque is third.
-With Waterloo winning and Cedar Rapids and Dubuque losing, the Black Hawks now have a four point lead in the Dupaco Cowbell Cup standings. However, the Black Hawks have played two more games than both Dubuque and CR.
-The Fighting Saints are back in action tomorrow against the very same Black Hawks team. Dubuque will travel to Young Arena for the second time this season, with puck drop slated for 7:05. Dubuque is 0-1 this year at Waterloo.
