Skeeters starting pitcher Heath Phillips (1-5) managed only five innings scattering seven hits and two earned runs with a couple walks and three strikeouts before he was removed to start the sixth in line for the loss. For the Bluefish, Dan Serafini (2-0) picked up his second win in his fourth outing with a respectable seven innings worked allowing just the one run on four hits and a couple of walks with two strikeouts.
Sugar Land scored first for the second night in a row, but hits came far and few between throughout the game. In the top of the third inning, the Skeeters started the scoring with a one-out double from shortstop Iggy Suarez into left-center field. Dominic Ramos walked in the next at-bat, and two batters later, designated-hitter Jason Lane brought Suarez around from second to put the Skeeters up, 1-0. Ramos tried to score in the same sequence of plays but was tagged out at home plate on a 7-6-2 rally from left field.
Phillips managed to hold Bridgeport scoreless through the first three innings, but in the bottom of the fourth, the home team tied it up. Atlantic League leader in home runs Brock Peterson was back in the starting lineup after missing game one, and he proved a difference maker early. With one out and nobody on, Peterson battled with Phillips until he finally cracked one over the left-field wall. His solo home run (15) tied the game, 1-1.
Much like in the first when Sugar Land scored one run in consecutive innings, Bridgeport reversed the trend on the Skeeters. In the bottom of the fifth, the Bluefish added one more when Elliot Ayala, Eddie Rogers, and Prentice Redman all hit singles with two outs in the inning. Redman's single brought in the go-ahead run to put the home team ahead, 2-1.
For good measure, the Bluefish tagged one more run on the sixth on reliever Eric Krebs who replaced Phillips after five. The righty gave up a leadoff single to Edgardo Baez and walked the second batter he faced, James Simmons, to put the runner in scoring position. One batter later, former Sugar Land Skeeter and newest Bridgeport Bluefish signing Luis Figueroa drove in the third run of the game with an RBI-single up the middle to extend the lead, 3-1.
Even though the Skeeters retired the last eight batters they faced in order from the sixth to the eighth, the Bluefish nailed 18 of 23 batters the Skeeters brought to the plate scattering five hits among six innings. For the third time on the road trip, Sugar Land only managed one run in a game with the final score, 3-1.
Skeeters Bites: Jason Lane hit his ninth double of the year and tallied his 17th RBI of the season...Bubba Bell went 2-for-2...The Skeeters overall record against the Bluefish is now (3-2)
