Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
GREENSBORO, NC - Through his first three starts of the season BlueClaws starter Jarred Cosart dominated the opposition, leading the SAL in wins and strikeouts.
Saturday night he finally met his match, but it wasn't the Grasshoppers.
Cosart left the game after only 2.1 innings pitched with an undisclosed injury, and the BlueClaws fell 4-2.
Cosart (3-1) cruised through the first two innings, striking out two before running into trouble in the third.
Chase Austin and Jose Torres led off the inning with base hits, and Michael Pasek brought Austin home with an RBI double to tie the game. Cosart left after facing that batter, and took his first loss of the season.
Siulman Lebron relieved Cosart and promptly gave up an RBI double to Rand Smith to give the Grasshoppers a 2-1 lead.
Smith would strike again in the fifth, hitting a two-run shot off Lebron to make the score 4-1.
Another Leandro Castro RBI double in the seventh would bring Lakewood within two, but that is as close as they would get.
Grasshoppers pitcher Bryan Evans (2-0) found out just hours before the game that he would be making a spot start for Chad James, who was placed on the disabled list. Evans struggled early, giving up five hits and one run through the first two innings.
In the second the BlueClaws were primed for a big inning as Sebastian Valle, Domingo Santana, and Stephen Batts all singled to load the bases with nobody out. But Evans managed to work out of the jam, striking out Alan Schoenberger and inducing a 4- 6-3 double play from Jiwan James to keep the deficit at one run.
The BlueClaws would only manage three more hits off Evans, who struck out six. Lakewood also struggled with runners in scoring position for the second straight game, going 2-for-10 and stranding nine on base.
The BlueClaws stranded 20 runners and went 3-for- 22 with RISP in their 14 inning win Friday night.
Sunday at 4:00 pm BlueClaws LHP Matt Way will look for his first win of the season (0-2 6.43) against RHP Erick Carillo (0-2 11.70).
