Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

Savannah, GA - The Savannah Sand Gnats (11-6) clipped the Hickory Crawdads 4-2 to begin an eight game home stand at Historic Grayson Stadium Saturday night.

The Crawdads (8-9) struck first, scoring twice in the top of the first inning against Gnats starter Jimmy Fuller. Hickory's first three batters all singled, giving the ‘Dads the bases loaded before Fuller retired a batter. A single and an RBI groundout gave Hickory the early lead, but Fuller limited the damage thanks to a pair of strikeouts. Fuller settled in after the first inning, and did not allow more than one hit in any of his seven subsequent innings.

The Gnats had baserunners in each of the first three innings, but broke through against Hickory's Robbie Ross in the fourth, the first inning in which the Gnats' leadoff batter reached base. 3B Jefry Marte drew a walk to begin the fourth inning. C Kai Gronauer blooped a single to shallow right field that advanced Marte to third. With runners at the corners, RF Cesar Puello ground a single through the left side to score Marte. Gronauer scored to tie the game 2-2 on DH Alex Gregory's RBI groundout. 2B Alonzo Harris then doubled down the leftfield line scoring Puello to give the Gnats a 3-2 advantage.

Savannah tacked on a run in the fifth inning when SS Wilmer Flores doubled and scored. Flores was 2-4 with a pair of doubles to run his team-best hitting streak to nine games.

For the second time this year, Fuller threw eight innings with nine strikeouts. With the win, Fuller improved to 3-1 with a 1.26 ERA.

LHP Mark Cohoon (3-0, 1.53) for Savannah takes on RHP Wilmer Font (2-0, 3.07) for the Crawdads in game two of the four-game series Sunday at 2:05 pm. The Sand Gnats pre-game show begins at 1:50 on News/Talk 630 WBMQ and online at www.sandgnats.com.
