Suns Drop Opener With Shorebirds

The Hagerstown Suns could not rebound from a six-run third inning by the Delmarva Shorebirds and fell 9-3 on Saturday night.

Hagerstown scored in the first inning with a double from first baseman Justin Bloxom off Jake Cowan (2-0) scored Francisco Soriano from third for a 1-0 lead. Bloxom would end 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

The Shorebirds got their bats going in the third. With the bases loaded and one out, Delmarva tied the game when Tyler Kolodny walked off Suns starter Josh Smoker (0-3), scoring Garabez Rosa. The next batter, first baseman Tyler Stampone hit a line drive double to center to clear the bases, scoring Gary Helmick, Michael Planeta and Kolodny. Three batters later with runners on the corners and two away, catcher Luis Bernardo doubled to left to score Stampone and Michael Ohlman. The Shorebirds led 6-1 after two-and-a-half innings.

In the next half of the inning, the Suns responded. After Soriano walked, shortstop Sean Nicol doubled to left center to score Soriano. Two batters later, Bloxom singled to center to score Nicol from second and get the Suns within three down 6-3, but the is the closest Hagerstown would get.

Delmarva put one run each in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings to seal the game 9-3.

Smoker got his third loss after giving up six runs in the third, going 2.2 innings. Paul Applebee came in relief of Smoker, giving up just one unearned run in three and a third, striking out four. Shane Erb came into the game in the seventh and pitched two innings, allowing two runs, one earned. Dean Weaver pitched a scoreless ninth inning with one strikeout.

Cowan picked up the win for the Shorebirds with six innings pitched with three runs, two earned, with eight strikeouts. Jake Smith and James Brandhorst combined for three innings of scoreless relief.

The Shorebirds improve to 10-7 while the Suns fall to 8-9. They will play game two of the four-game set on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. Gates to Municipal Stadium will open at 1:05 p.m.
